O for a bike shed!

It might not look much yet – just a metal frame and a concrete slab floor – but the low level structure taking shape at the side of our new building is the much needed and long awaited staff bike shed! Ever since we undertook a staff travel survey back in 2009 as part of the Gallery’s sustainability work, and wrote a Green Travel Plan, the issue of cycling to work, staff bike facilities, including a secure and dry store, and staff showers has featured in our new building development plans.

The University of Manchester has for some time now been promoting sustainable transport options and offers various incentives to staff including bike finance schemes, safe cycle training, security bike marking, maintenance sessions and other events (see: http://www.sustainability.manchester.ac.uk). The Gallery too has encouraged cycling not only to staff, but also to our visitors – with walking, cycling and public transport being promoted as the best ways for our local audiences to visit us. Many of our staff cycle to work, with the numbers increasing since our staff car park disappeared under the ISG site cabins, but leaving bikes in corridors and in the basement, has not been ideal and our visitor facilities have until now also been a bit thin!

So, the future will be much improved with a dedicated store for staff, lockers, hooks for drying off wet clothing, showers alongside our new staff toilets, and for our visitors too a covered and well lit store just off Denmark Road comprising 7 double sided Sheffield stands.
