A new connection with the park

The first page of the first sketchbook our architects, MUMA presented to us way back in 2009 showed a wide aperture in the west wall of our exhibition galleries that responded to a quote from Margaret Pilkington (Director of the Whitworth from 1936-59) that said:

“I have come to the conclusion that a good museum or gallery should be a place where people feel comfortable. If it stands in a garden or park, the visitors should be able to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors as a counterpoint to what is within.”

This week, our contractors, ISG, have installed a huge steel lintel in the wall of what will be the central space of our suite of three connecting exhibition galleries. At the moment, all of us, staff and visitors alike think of our exhibition galleries as being at ground floor level, but as can be seen in the photograph, this new opening will be at first floor level at the back of the building, looking out through the Promenade onto the Art Garden and Whitworth Park, and in the future a truly delightful position to enjoy both the beauty of our green surroundings and the art within.
