Digging out the Lions Den!

The space in the Gallery basement, underneath our temporary exhibition galleries, has for as long as I can remember been called ‘The Lions Den’ – I don’t know anyone who knows the reason, and an attempt a few years ago to give the room a number was doomed to fail! Even when this space becomes our new collections store and access area, I suspect staff will still refer to it by its old, familiar, and quirky name.

The shape of the space, however, is rapidly changing, as the old concrete slab is broken up and the depth of the floor is dug out to create full height rooms that will be level with the rest of our lower ground floor and the future adjacent Art Garden. For so long now, these rooms have been tucked away out of sight and it will be an amazing change to see them brought into the light and in direct contact with Whitworth Park.
